The InkNews - Current IssueMarch 2008 ***********************************************************The InkNews! A publication of MaxPatch Ink Supplies *********************************************************** Welcome to The InkNews! This is Issue # 86, March, 2008. Hello good folks! Ah, Daylight Saving Time, longer days and a bit less cold has finally arrived! Spring and warm weather can't be too far away, right? Hurry up already! We want to wish you all a Happy Easter as we Christains celebrate the resurection of Jesus Christ. And yes, I still kinda believe in the Easter Bunny (<-- discount code hint) since, after all these years, I keep finding some "weird colored" eggs in the yard at this time of year!! -- "Middle age is when you've met so many people that every new person you meet reminds you of someone else." - Ogden Nash -- Thank you for your time and most of all, for your trust! Remember, this is your publication too! Don't be shy, tell us what you want! We are... gratefully yours, Phil & Clara McKinney, Owners P.S. - Don't forget to use the current "Subscriber Only" 10% Discount code when purchasing any of our products! Details further below and in each issue. #### The InkNews is a double opt-in list. We never send out unsolicited ema^l. Administrative/Contact/Subscription management info will ALWAYS be found at the end of each newsletter. #### #### CURRENT ISSUE Viewable On the Web Here: http://www.maxpatchink.com/currentissue.shtml * Bookmark or save the above URL to your Favorites folder or your computer desktop for quick access. #### *********************************************************** Now, on with 'The InkNews'.... *********************************************************** Coming Soon: I know this is sounding like a broken record but we still do not have any of the "newer" remanufactured or compatible Epson cartridges available. Neither does anyone else! Since the ruling by the ITC (Intl. Trade Commission) in Epson's favor last November, availability of most third party (money saving) cartridges are severely restricted! There is hope as the US Patent Office has agreed to take a "very" close look at some of the patents Epson has claimed. We'll see! Epson (and Canon) compatible cartridges were a pretty significant part of our (and other's) business. This has put a dent in our business as well as the recent actions by Canon to institute "computer chips" in their PIXMA iP series printers. We do believe in the manufacturers' right to intellectual property rights but, it's all about choice folks, your choice to use alternative printer supplies. So long as the printer mfgs. keep using "firmware" updates and lockout codes, chips and, frivolous lawsuits.... we all suffer the fallout! Stay tuned... we think it'll get better, at least we hope it does, we're hurting and do appreciate your patience! (We're sure your wallets and pocket books are too!) *********************************************************** Industry/Printer News: *********************************************************** We pledge to keep you informed. Stay tuned by checking the info and links below! - Phil Very Welcome News.... HP Upgrades Consumer Tech Support - February 28, 2008 HP announced the most substantial investment in consumer technical support in its history – the aim of which is to enable people to get faster, more effective help with the HP technology products in their homes. Customer service agents from Missouri to Moscow are now equipped with state-of-the art tools to help customers quickly return to their tasks, whether printing photos or connecting online with friends. HP’s investment is focused in three areas: A new customer support infrastructure, serving customers in 132 counties and 31 languages; Eight new call centers, including ones in Alabama, Missouri and Oregon and five others around the world; and a support agent training pilot program and expanded availability of key technology tools. http://www.rechargermag.com/articles/58953/ -- World's Largest Retailer Recycling Cartridges February 1, 2008 Eastman Kodak Company and Wal-Mart Stores announced the launch of a national program to recycle used materials from in-store picture kiosks. The program is underway at about 4,100 Wal-Mart stores and Sam’s Clubs in the U.S. that operate KODAK Picture Kiosks, and is expected to annually recycle two million pounds of thermal printer ribbon, spools and cartridges. That amount is equivalent to the weight of approximately six, 250-passenger commercial airliners. http://www.rechargermag.com/articles/58917/ -- Get Copies of Your Tax Returns at Staples at No Cost February 25, 2008 While electronic filing tax returns can save time and money, it is still important to keep a hard copy of tax documents. To make it easy, on April 15, Staples Copy & Print Centers nationwide will provide free copies, up to 20 pages, of 2007 tax returns. http://www.rechargermag.com/articles/58831/ -- In the printer cartridge marketplace, major manufacturers are increasingly employing chip, computer technology or lawsuits as a means to lockout competition and capture the aftermarket parts and supplies business. Do you want to protect your "right to choose" which printer supplies you want to use? Fight Back! Contact your govt. officials: Here is a sample letter that you can send to the FTC as well as your congress-person. Please show your support! http://www.rechargermagazine.com/mcv/research/governmentcontacts/ -- Remanufactured and compatible printer supplies save consumers Hard Earned dollars and most certainly offer a High Quality alternative. - Phil -- Recharger Magazine - Cartridge Remanufacturing Industry News: http://www.rechargermag.com/mcv/read/breakingnews/ -- Please properly dispose of your old computer, monitor, cell phone or printer! These web sites will help you find electronics recyclers in your area. It's a win-win solution. You get rid of stuff you don't need, help a good cause, and do the environment a big favor! http://www.maxpatchink.com/buying-tips.shtml#recycle -- Recycle This: That's right - recycle this newsletter. There are no landfill problems, no toxic waste issues, and it's easy to do. Just forward this newsletter to someone who's never seen it. :) - Phil *********************************************************** Reader Contributions and Printer Tips: (send in your question or tip, don't be shy!) Send to: news@maxpatchink.com subject - printer tips *********************************************************** How To Easily Print Multiple Files Together Follow these instructions: 1. Create a folder for the files you want to print. (Let's create one on your computer's desktop for easy access and instructional purposes) Go to your computer's Desktop then Right Click anywhere on it. From the pop-up menu select New then select Folder. Type in a File Name (let's call it "Print Folder", for example). 2. Next, find the file you want print and copy it. (Right Click on it and select Copy). 3. Go to the "Print Folder" you created on the Desktop, open it by double-clicking, next place the file in there by right-clicking anywhere inside of it and selecting Paste from the Edit menu on the toolbar. Repeat this until you have all the files you want to print in the folder. 4. Select all the files in the folder and print them. From the Menu bar on the folder you created, select Edit then Select All. This will "highlight" all of the files in there. Simply right-click on any one of them and select Print. 5. Each program and file will be opened and printed automatically. Easy-peezy, right? - Phil -- How To Print Captured Files (PRN files): Turn 'em loose! All of us at one time or another in our experience with computers and printers, have said to ourselves while sitting at the print screen dialog options, "Print to File, what's that and, why would I want to?" Well, naturally we try it and we are left with this PRN file. What The Heck Is A PRN File? A PRN file is a special type of file which contains instructions for a printer. It tells the printer what to print on the page and where, as well as which paper tray to use, what the paper size is and a number of other controls. You can open a .PRN file in any text editor but what you'll likely see is your text surrounded by a whole bunch of "junk" characters which represent all the various printer codes necessary to set margins, special spacing, graphics, etc. PRN files are usually created automatically by a printer driver, in fact this is the primary purpose of the printer driver; to translate the generic output from an application such as Word or Notepad into something the printer can understand and interpret. Normally this whole process of creating the PRN file is transparent, you print a document in your favorite application and the paper starts feeding through the printer. There can be some uses for intercepting and capturing a PRN file before it gets to the printer. Having the PRN file allows you to reprint the document without running or even having the original application that created the file. Print to File is perfect for being able to reproduce an exact print out time and time again, you just need to know how to print the PRN file, which is where PrnPrint enters the picture. PrnPrint (386k - W9x/2k/XP) is a no-cost program that allows you to easily print captured "Print to file" files, (*.prn), text files (*.txt) and postscript files (*.ps). You can even select an option in this application that will add a link in your Send To menu that points to the program, PrnPrint. Get it here: http://www.magma.ca/~russrite/PrnPrint/index.html One way you can configure your system is that when you right-click and "Send To" PrnPrint, it will wait in a dropped files tab until you tell it to print. Another option is to set PrnPrint to automatically print anything in the dropped files tab. This makes a great solution for printing out "read me" text files without having to open them on the screen first. Another very similar and easy to use program for sending files to be printed directly to the printer is PrintFile. It's also no-cost. PrintFile is a Windows utility program that will enable you to print files fast and easily. The program recognizes plain text, PostScript, Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) and binary formats. Using this program can save you a lot of paper. http://www.lerup.com/printfile/ -- To maintain the highest quality, remember to store your HP, Dell and Lexmark cartridges upright. Doing this will keep the ink from flowing away from the print head and will help avoid defects. -- Don't forget to turn your printer off when not in use (end of day). This will help prevent clogging of the nozzles in the print head. Use the printer's on/off switch, not a 'power strip'. Using the on/off switch will fully activate the printhead capping mechanism and help prevent drying. -- Never, never, ever leave cartridges out of your Epson, Canon or Brother printer!! The ink will dry inside the printhead (cartridge holder) within a few minutes! -- More tips at the Max Patch Ink web site! http://www.maxpatchink.com/printer-tips.shtml *********************************************************** Are you having to run the 'cleaning' program on your Epson printer more than a couple of times just to get a decent print out? Your printhead is probably dirty and/or getting clogged! Running the 'cleaning' program is NOT always enough to keep it 'clean'! Prevent problems and prolong the life of your Epson printer! http://www.maxpatchink.com/epsonclean.shtml -- "Thanks so much for your Epson printer cleaning product. I had put up with shoddy printing for quite some time. I came upon your site while searching for a solution to the crappy printing I was getting. I bought your product. And it worked wonderfully. I was thinking I would need a new printer. My Cyan needed two cleanings but once done I finally have blue again. I had not seen blue on my printer for probably a year. I am glad I know I can fix this. I honestly had no idea. I assumed you threw them away and got a new printer. Thanks again", - Kathy Hassig *********************************************************** No-Cost Printer Related Programs and Resources *********************************************************** Calendar Magic This is a very entertaining and informative software program.
